February 19, 2026. Taonan, Jilin, China. Fu Shuling (61) transcribes her speech draft for a weekly Christian assembly.

Profile 4: Fu Shuling (Maternal Second Aunt-in-law, 61)

Born in 1965. The eldest daughter of the family, Fu’s life was fractured by early loss. Her mother had moved from Shandong to Northeast China, only to die of leukaemia at 32 after a village healer’s “treatments” delayed proper medical care. Within a year, her father remarried. The young stepmother’s cruelty—skimping on their food and clothing—forced Fu and her brother to flee to a relative’s house. Unable to go out in the bitter cold and unable to raise the 2.50 yuan tuition fee, Fu had to quit school to scavenge for firewood and beg for grain. She says, “Children with parents didn’t have to go through this hell.”

Giving up her education remains a lifelong pain. “I truly loved learning. I always topped the class,” she recalls. “I had huge passion for maths—the buzz I got from solving an equation was amazing. I could memorise a complete chapter on the three-mile walk home, but I barely reached fourth grade. It was extremely cold, I had no appropriate clothes, and we couldn’t afford the fees.” Even now, she is haunted by a recurring nightmare: “I’m back in the classroom, staring at the blackboard, but the words are an illegible blur. I would wake up panicked with anxiety...”

As her relatives struggled to feed her, they urged her to get married at 20. She agreed, worried about her younger siblings being trapped. The memory of childbirth at home still chills her. “It was agony,” she says. “In those days you just had a midwife at home. No pain relief, nothing. The pain was so bad I just wanted the ground to open up and swallow me.” She hoped her son would “escape the land” through education, but he dropped out in his second year of high school—a decision he regrets.

Fu eventually found a sense of peace through Christianity, influenced by her mother-in-law (my grandma). She bought a ten-yuan Bible. “I didn’t expect it to be such a page-turner. I’ve been through it four times, checking every word I didn’t know in the dictionary,” she says. “It changed me entirely. It taught me forgiveness and letting go. Now I can stay calm for anything.”

February 16, 2026. Taonan, Jilin, China. Cui Yanxia (49) prepares a meal, with the book “Live a Life on Your Own Terms” resting by the stove.

Profile 6: Cui Yanxia (Maternal Uncle’s Daughter, 49)

Born in 1977. In 1997, 20-year-old Cui graduated as a top student in mechanical manufacturing, dreaming that her technical expertise would be her hard-won ticket out of the grime of rural life. However, the “1998 mass layoffs wave” shattered her blue-collar ambitions. “The year I graduated, the factories simply collapsed,” she recalls.

Her attempts to find a new path in the city were met with blunt discrimination. Applying for waitressing roles, she was turned away by bosses who deemed her appearance—judged on her weight and hair length—unfit for the job. Eventually, nudged by parental pressure to marry and the promise of a stable granary job, she returned to the Taonan countryside. A clerical error during her hometown household registration permanently altered her name, twisting “Xiá 霞” (rosy clouds) into “Xiá 俠” (knight-errant).

With rural jobs scarce, she was left with no choice but to work the land. She was engaged at 24, married at 25, and a mother by 26. In the early years, overwhelmed by a crying child, she spent her days in tears, feeling life had lost its meaning; it was only recently, while scrolling through her phone, that she found a name for it: postpartum depression. Watching her former classmates thrive in the cities, she was once consumed by regret. “After I had Ma Shuang, I thought—is this it? Am I just going to muddle through life in the countryside?” Yet, over time, she found a way to enjoy the warmth of village life.

Since 2022, seeking the stability of wuxian yijin (the “five insurances and one fund” social security) she has balanced farming with a role as a livestock epidemic assistant, administering vaccines and logging data in sewage-drenched sheep pens. She has transformed her own thwarted escape into a springboard for her daughter. To ensure Ma Shuang’s freedom, Cui shoulders over 100,000 yuan in annual tuition fees. “Ma Shuang can go wherever she likes—the further the better,” Cui says. “Though perhaps not too far—at my age, I wouldn’t even know how to board a plane to find her."
February 20, 2026. Taonan, Jilin, China. Cui Shuyun (63) stands at the doorstep of her rural home, gazing toward the distant horizon.

Profile 5: Cui Shuyun (Maternal Third Aunt, 63)

Born in 1963. Cui dropped out of school in the sixth grade. "It was a five-kilometre dirt track," she recalls. "I had no one to cycle with, and in the summer when the crops grew high, I was scared." She believes her memory was affected by starvation at the time, making it difficult for her to learn. From the age of 15 to 18, she worked for a local production team. Her family's financial situation only improved after the redistribution of collective land to individuals. Cui married a stranger at the age of 23 and had a son next year. Her husband was a heavy drinker and addicted to his phone. Her mother-in-law held the purse strings. Despite Cui's tireless farming and shepherding efforts, every penny she made had to be handed over.

She can clearly recall a day in 2023 during hot summer. Returning exhausted from the fields, she was brutally beaten by her husband simply because she couldn't loosen a bolt on the vehicle. The assault was so severe that she lost consciousness and bladder control. "I thought about calling the police," she says, "but I worried a blemish on the family’s political record would jeopardize my grandson’s prospects for higher education. So, I just kept silent."

It was only while working odd jobs away from home that her value was finally appreciated. Whether picking guniang (golden berries) in Da’an, working as a domestic helper in Changchun, or in a canteen in Shanghai, others praised her for being clean and efficient. "There was too little joy in my life, but working away was quite happy. There were people to talk to, and they recognized my worth," she says. She is still looking for odd jobs in Changchun, trying to earn enough money for her own flat for retirement, but finding work at the age of 60 is becoming increasingly difficult.

She adds, "If I were a man, I would certainly be better off and could support a family." She believes that as a woman, her silence and unyielding nature were treated as flaws. "I've lived this life without any luck, only suffering and toil. I used to think about killing myself, but now I just go with the flow," she says.
February 12, 2026. Taonan, Jilin, China. Cui Shuhua kneads dough for the family meal.

Profile 2: Cui Shuhua (Maternal Eldest Aunt, 69)

Born in 1957. A naturally gifted student, Cui ranked among the top of her class in junior high. However, in 1970, at the height of the Cultural Revolution, her grandfather’s “landlord” status became a political stain. Denied the necessary recommendation for senior high school, her education was cut short. At 17, she was conscripted into a production team, performing back-breaking manual labour—hauling heavy baskets of earth and mucking out animal pens in the biting cold.

To keep the family afloat, she spent years frying mahua (dough twists) deep into the night. She would knead the dough at midnight and push her cart through the villages at the crack of dawn. “Thirty catties of flour made 210 twists, and I’d earn over twenty yuan a day,” she recalls. “Back then, that was half a month's wages for a job in production team.”

At 26, despite a resistance to marriage, she succumbed to a hasty union to quiet the pressure from those around her. She remembers one midnight while she was at her fryer, her husband returned home in a drunken rage. “He took a knife and started hacking—thud, thud—chopping the dough to pieces and splitting the kneading board,” she says. “He screamed that the children were awake and neglected, and asked why I was wasting my time frying. My business died that night.” Though she thinks she should have walked out then, divorce was a social taboo at the time. Instead, she stayed, eventually financing her two children's education by herding sheep.

In 2010, aged 53, she finally chose to divorce—a rare and radical move for a woman in rural China. Lacking legal knowledge, she suffered an ‘empty-handed exit’, losing her inheritance and the very flock of sheep she had raised to her ex-husband. She worked as a live-in nanny in Changchun and Shanghai. Though the pay was good, the urban high-rises felt stifling. She recalls a night back in her pitch-black village when she encountered a cow: “We just stood there, staring at each other. I thought to myself—my heart is heavy, and hers is too.”

Looking back, her regrets are tethered to education. She blames her younger, timid self for not begging her teachers for a way to stay in school, and she mourns the fact that money was too tight to send her daughter to the best high school. “Knowledge is your capital. It’s true wealth,” she reflects. “Without it, you can do nothing.”

February 12, 2026. Taonan, Jilin, China. Cui Shuying (57) minces meat for dumpling filling at her home.

Profile 3: Cui Shuying (Maternal Third Aunt, 57)

Born in 1969. At twelve, Cui left school during the fifth grade, simply because all the other girls had dropped out. “It was a feudal mindset back then. I was terrified of even speaking to the boys,” she says. Her teachers once shamed her for wearing white dresses, branding her "preening”—a scorn that curdled her interest in education.

In her early twenties, Cui divorced her first husband after three months due to domestic violence. “A divorcee can’t be choosy,” she was told. She was ushered into a second arranged marriage.

Decades of herding sheep by day and irrigation by night have left her bitter. “It’s hell on earth. I’d rather earn any wage than remain a peasant,” she says. “Dark skin and wrinkles. One look at us next to same age office workers tells the story.”

“I’ve spent my entire life living for everyone else,” she reflects. “I raised the grandkids, and now they’re grown, I’m still expected to cook. Thirty years of serving, and they still complain if the food isn’t perfect. I’ve ‘borrowed’ all my savings to help my son’s business.” The endless “catering” has become a crushing weight. Every autumn, she is expected to cook meals all day long for table after table of hired workers. “I hate cooking, ” she says.

A 2025 trip to Shanghai for her husband’s cancer treatment shattered her rural horizon. Her nephew took her to the Bund. The sight of the metropolis was a revelation. “I must live for myself!” she realised. “You people with knowledge can go anywhere,” she says. “I still have to be guided. It’s difficult to read characters, and I have no idea how to hail a car on a phone. But I’m learning. I’m even trying to figure out AI now.”
February 19, 2026. Taonan, Jilin, China. Zhao Guiqin (90) reads the Bible in the quiet of her home.

Profile 1: Zhao Guiqin (Grandmother, 90)

Born in 1936 into a family of land-owning gentry, Zhao’s family fortunes declined following the 1931 Japanese invasion and Land Reform. Her family was labeled “Rich Peasants” because of her father’s patrol officer background, and her grandfather’s well-built coffin was taken away by others.

“I endured every misery imaginable,” Zhao recalls her childhood. She was obliged to memorise Japanese in school under the puppet state of Manchukuo, and her palms were struck for failing. At thirteen, she took the place of donkeys at the domestic stone mill, driving the heavy wheel on her own to achieve a finer grind.“I was too small for the task,” she says. “I pushed and I wept.” She also spent her days scavenging for medicinal herbs in the wild, once hiding from a wolf that sat, dog-like, at a doorstep.

Extreme poverty pushed Zhao and her mother to beg. “I found it humiliating. I was afraid of being seen by familiars,” she says. She appreciates the rare mercy of an elderly couple who invited her onto their kang (heated brick bed) for a bowl of dried millet mixed with pickled cabbage—a meal she remembers as “sour and delicious.” To survive the winter, she once swapped jackets with a neighbour, only to find the garment infested with lice. “Lice always bite the stranger,” she says, recalling a body covered in welts. Without socks, her heels cracked into deep, raw fissures in the frost. “Every step felt like a cat gnawing at my flesh,” she says, pointing to her ankles.

The end of the Second World War brought fresh terrors. In July 1945, the Soviet Red Army—locally known as the “Big Noses”—arrived in armoured vehicles. They slaughtered livestock and dismantled houses for firewood. “They were tall, with yellow eyes and rifles,” Zhao recalls. “They didn’t hit the men or the children, but they violated the women.” The following day, the Huzi (bandits) arrived on horseback. ”I thought they would have long beards (huzi means beards in Chinese), but they were just outlaws,” she says. They held the family at gunpoint, binding Zhao’s father and parading him behind a horse while lashing him with whips.

Following an arranged marriage at sixteen. Lacking any means of contraception, Zhao bore seven children, nearly bleeding to death during a miscarriage. She considers those born in this era to be truly ‘blessed’ (xiangfu), living a life of fortune that was once unimaginable. For more than three decades, Zhao has found sanctuary in Christianity, praying three times a day and crediting her long life to divine blessing. She frequently sighs at the impermanence of fate, recalling her father’s adage: “To ride a horse or a sedan chair is a blessing earned; to push a cart or shoulder a load is simply one’s destined lot.“

Profile 7: Ma Shuang (Niece, 25)

Born in 2001. Ma has held a huge passion for painting since childhood, though the learning costs initially made her dream out of reach. It wasn’t until her second year of high school, after a friend suggested a trial class, that everything changed. “It was just as I’d imagined,” she says. “I fell in love with it after just one class.”

“I consider myself part of the ‘uplifted’ generation. There hasn’t been a single request I’ve made that wasn’t fulfilled,” Ma says. She recalls her mother’s stories of finishing technical college in Changchun and trekking home alone through the night because there were no buses back to Taonan. Yet for Ma’s generation, when Ma asked to study art—a path once deemed “prohibitively expensive”—her parents sent her to the premier intensive training in Changchun. She spent over nine hours a day painting. “You had to sprint to the supermarket to squeeze out a few minutes for drawing,” she says. Her persistence eventually secured her a place at Changchun University.

As graduation loomed, Ma joined the millions attempting to sit the civil service exam, a marathon that took her across the province, to cities such as Baishan, Tonghua, Jilin, and Songyuan. “My best result was fifth place,” Ma notes, “but you only secure the job if you are first.” She turns to puzzles and pop-culture fandom to relieve stress.

A recent viewing of her mother’s 1999 wedding video gave her a profound sense of intergenerational connection. Watching the young woman on the screen and then her own reflection in the mirror, Ma felt a sudden resonance. “We are so much alike,” Ma says. “It was the first time it really clicked how similar we are. It felt quite surreal, but lovely too—a bit of a thrill, really.”

December 20, 2023. Longqiu Village, Shenzhen, China. Ms. Li, nearly 60, sweeps the streets of Longqiu Village. She has been a sanitation worker for a month, having been forced to quit her previous job as a waitress due to the physical strain of climbing stairs. Seeking a more flexible livelihood, she and her husband moved to Shenzhen last year to join their son. In August, their landlord ordered them to vacate under the pretext of a “leak”—only for the family to later discover the building was being reclaimed for a “unified rental housing” (tongzu) redevelopment project. Ms. Li notes that the 500 RMB moving cost was a heavy burden; now, her family of three shares a single, kitchenless room in the same village for 1,000 RMB a month.
